PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Tour brings together player from over 30 nations
SEOUL, South Korea -- October 1, 2007 -- Today the second leg of the PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) was launched in Seoul by the world’s largest online learn-to-play poker site – www.pokerstars.net .
Kicking off at 2pm in the exclusive Sheraton Walkerhill Hotel and Casino, the tournament will be running for the next three days, bringing together a world class field.
A field of 186 players from 33 countries around the world are competing for a share of the estimated US$500,000 tournament prize pool, and all are attempting to become the first PokerStars.net APPT Seoul Champion.
The field is made up of some of the most renowned names in modern poker – the 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP) winner Aussie Joe Hachem is playing, as well as New Zealand champion, Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson, in the hope of making Sunday’s final table.
There is also a strong representation from the Asian region, with some great up and coming players trying to take home the winner’s trophy. Vietnamese born Tuan Lam, runner up in this year’s WSOP Main Event, outlasting all but one of the 6,354 participants and winning US$4.8 million for his outstanding accomplishment. Tuan Lam returns to Asia for the first time since his US success. Japanese local Masa Kagawa, a player who made a name for himself at this year’s Aussie Millions will also be hoping to continue his good form in the tournament.
Bertrand Grospellier better known by his professional computer gamer ID, “ElkY” will be putting his best hand forward. The 26 year old has been living in South Korea as a professional gamer for almost six years and is one of the top-ranked Starcraft players in his adopted homeland. There will also be a whole host of players from across the region, and the world, who won their way to the event via free online tournaments at PokerStars.net, receiving flights, accommodation and their chance to be crowned champion.
Overseeing all PokerStars.net APPT tournaments will be the region’s most prominent tournament director, Danny McDonagh, under whose direction the Aussie Millions earned its reputation as one of the world’s best run and most successful tournaments.
“Joining the PokerStars.net APPT is a great opportunity enabling me to continue my work developing poker in the Asia Pacific region,” Danny said. “We look forward to the same energy and excitement being replicated in Seoul this weekend as we saw at APPT Manila.”
As well as poker action, the Pokerstars.net APPT is working hand in hand with local tourism boards to include a wide range of tourism experiences for players and their families.
“Poker is still at an early stage in many of the countries we hope to visit with the PokerStars.net APPT,” said Jeffrey Haas, President and co-founder of the PokerStars.net APPT. “But for those forward-thinking authorities that embrace the opportunities it offers, the APPT also promises to kick-start a whole new type of tourism in the region. The APPT Seoul will be the first major event of its kind in Korea, attracting players from all corners of the world. This in turn will help stimulate tremendous local economic benefit - because one of our key aims is to ensure players, their friends and families enjoy the local sights and experiences. To this end, we are working closely with the Korean tourism board to provide all our visitors with some amazing opportunities to enjoy these beautiful destinations.”
One further venue is expected to be announced ahead of the tour grand final in Sydney, Australia at Star City Casino from December 13-16.
